The Eighth Doctor is reunited with his darker side in the latest volume of Doctor Who audio series Time War – out now on CD and download!

The latest Doctor Who box set starring Paul McGann is now available, and it’s another major release for the Eighth Doctor! The third volume of Time War gives us four more brand new stories set during the conflict – and the return of one of his most dangerous enemies!

In last month’s issue of Vortex – Big Finish’s very own magazine – script editor Matt Fitton has revealed what we can expect from this latest release.

"There’s not an arc as such (in this box set). The stories run into one another: they are a consequence of what comes before. There is something of a theme – we touch on the idea of alternative timelines and parallel universes, so within the Time War the idea that barriers between realities are breaking down."

This box set looks set to explore a number of interesting themes and stories. The first episode, State of Bliss, sounds especially intriguing, as it looks set to focus on the Eighth Doctor’s companion in the Time War, Bliss. Her timeline has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been drastically affected by the War. Having an episode focused on her will be an interesting listen.

However, the big draw of the box set is The War Valeyard. Featuring the return of the Doctor’s darker side in physical form, this episode looks set to explore the Valeyard in a brand new way. You can expect our thoughts on all four stories in Time War Volume Three later this week.

Covers for volumes one and two of the series have now been updated to include the Time War logo used for volume three and Gallifrey.

Makeover

Rather interestingly, along with the release of this third volume, the previous two volumes in The Eighth Doctor: Time War series have been given a bit of a makeover, at least as far as the download copies are concerned. Whereas the previous two volumes had their own unique logo for the Time War, they’ve now been updated to include the same logo that volume three uses.

This logo was originally used for spin-off series Gallifrey: Time War, so it looks like Big Finish are trying to bring that era in under one brand. It’s an interesting move, but I like it. It helps to simplify things just that little bit more.

The original covers are still included in the downloads, at least. The updated covers are just a way of making the series look a little more uniform. Even the silver Classic Series brand logo that was used for the first Time War box set has been replaced by the current logo for Doctor Who. We might not get these new covers physically, but it’s nice to see them match up better in the downloads.

The Eighth Doctor: Time War Volume Three is out now on CD and digital from Big Finish Productions. You can also purchase volumes one and two separately, or get them in a bundle.
