Sorry, Star Wars fans: Boba Fett is NOT in The Mandalorian

If you’re like many fans of the original Star Wars trilogy, you have a particular affection for a minor bounty hunter character named Boba Fett, last seen sliding down the gullet of the sarlacc in Return of the Jedi.

You’d love to see this guy in action again, to learn more about him, to take a deep dive into a mysterious character whose few minutes of screen time captured the imaginations of millions and earned him a cult followers. Pretty good for a character who had very few lines and never removed his helmet.

Some were hoping that Fett might make a comeback in The Mandalorian, a live-action Star Wars series coming to Disney+ when it drops this November. After all, it involves a lead character (played by Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal) who clearly goes to Boba’s tailor:

So might Fett return? According to showrunner Jon Favreau, speaking on Good Morning America, it’s not in the cards:

“Boba Fett is not ,” says Favreau. “They’re all original characters.” Bummer.

The new show will be set in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, in the middle of a “30-year stretch of story time that hasn’t been explored at all, except in the extended universe.”  And while Fett may not make a personal appearance, Favreau lights up on the subject of including “obscure” Star Wars Easter Eggs:

"Oh yeah! We had even the rifle with a forked end on it, the bayonet on the end was from the Holiday Special [1978], with Boba Fett in it, the original time you saw him. So we have lots of deep cuts in the show, and I can’t wait for people who love Star Wars to see it."

Most fans first saw Boba Fett when Darth Vader hired him as a bounty hunter to track down Han Solo in Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back. Then there was the sarlaac incident in Return of the Jedi. George Lucas used CGI to add Fett to Episode IV: A New Hope in 1991, and we saw him as a clone raised by Jango Fett in Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

Boba Fett fans will again have to wait to see the icon in action again, but with the frantic pace of project development these days, we think he’ll turn up somewhere sooner or later.
