Outlander fans are currently in the midst of the “droughtlander,” a made-up word that so perfectly encapsulates the feelings of listlessness between seasons I’m shocked it’s not already in the dictionary. Starz is currently in the thick of production on season 5, with intriguing new details coming out all the time.
Alas, we still don’t have an exact release date for when season 5 will premiere, but Starz Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Hirsch took pity on fans at this year’s Television Critics Association summer press tour and at least gave us a window:
"Finally, to calm social media down, we will bring the end of ‘Droughtlander.’ The highly anticipated return of the epic and acclaimed series Outlander will debut its fifth season early next year."
Oh, he used the term “droughtlander.” He’s hip to the lingo.
The way Pop Sugar figures it, season 5 will premiere sometime in January, hopefully on Sunday, January 5, as early as possible. That way, Pop Sugar reasons, American Gods season 3 can kick off sometime in April, and the integrity of Starz’s yearly schedule can be preserved.
Season 5 of Outlander will be based on The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in Diana Gabaldon’s series of novels. As with a lot of shows based on books, Outlander is going farther afield of the source material the longer it stays on the air, but there’s still a template for what will befall Jamie and Claire Fraser in the new world.
