See some new footage from HBO’s Watchmen!

We’re rapidly approaching the premiere of Damon Lindelof’s take on Watchmen, which will drop on HBO in October. It’s been a couple of weeks since we last saw new footage from the much-anticipated show, and about a month since the proper trailer. Now, the drip continues with a trailer from HBO Portugal, which gives us a glimpse at a couple new scenes. Check it out!

“The cavalry’s back,” Don Johnson’s characters says at the top of the trailer. We know the show will feature a group of extremists who wear masks modeled after the one Rorschach wore in the original comic. Is the name of their organization “the cavalry,” or is that just a turn of phrase Johnson is using?

Also, I feel like I finally understand the stakes of the show a little better. The Cavalry (or whatever they’re called) targeted police officers, so the police started covering their faces so their identities wouldn’t be revealed, which is why they’re all wearing masks in the promos.

Showrunner Damon Lindelof told Indiewire that tensions with law enforcement will be a key part of the show. “[Alan Moore’s original 1986 graphic novel] was about what was happening in American culture at the time,” he said. “What, in 2019, is the equivalent of the nuclear standoff between the Russians and the United States? And it just felt like it was undeniably race and policing in America. And so that idea started to graft itself into the Watchmen universe and needed to be presented in a responsible way.”

Wouldn’t the new apocalyptic threat be climate change? Whatever, I’m not a TV writer.

Also fun is the scene where Jean Smart’s character asks someone if his civil rights are being violated after he’s handcuffed by police (or at least I assume those are masked policed officers.) “I’m sorry, I was just kidding, I don’t care.” Edgy.

Smart is playing Laurie Black, who is most likely an older version of the character Silk Spectre from the original comic.

Notice anything else? Let’s discuss!
