HBO unveils official release date for Watchmen!

Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) is adapting Alan Moore’s classic graphic novel, Watchmen, into a live-action show for HBO. We’ve seen a full-length trailer featuring masked police officers taking down bad guys and some Rorschach impersonators fomenting rebellion. Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias (Jeremy Irons) is grown old and Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre (Jean Smart) is working as an FBI agent. Lindelof’s show will take place in the world Moore created, but it’s clearly not the same story.

The show is a highly anticipated part of HBO’s fall lineup. For a while, we’ve known it was coming in October, but didn’t know exactly when. But now…

Lindelof talked about the show in TV Guide’s Fall Preview issue. Fan page hbo.watchmen plumbed the depths of the interview and extracted a lot of interesting information, including a release date. You can see it all on the second image in the Instagram post below: “Premieres Sunday, Oct. 20, 9/8c, HBO.”

So there you go! Watchmen very likely premieres on October 20.

UPDATE: And now HBO has officially unveiled that the show will indeed premiere on October:

Set your watches, watchmen.

There’s some interesting stuff in the interview itself, too:

  • The show will take place in a world with strict gun controls; even the police have only limited access to firearms. Lindelof is tackling some touchy political subjects. You can read more about what he has planned here.
  • The group of militant discount Rorschachs is called the “Seventh Cavalry.”
  • Robert Redford plays the President of the United States, who’s held the position for 27 years.
  • At this point in the Watchmen timeline, everyday people train in combat skills “inspired by comic books.”
  • Lindelof wants the show to be accessible for newbies, but is also bringing the weirdness. “On a scale of 1 to 10, if giant alien squid is a 10, I’m going all the way for the 10.”

This sounds like a ton of fun! Hopefully, we’ll see how it all unfolds on October 20.

Next. Dark Fate could kick off a new Terminator trilogy. dark
