Official trailer and premiere date for Catherine the Great on HBO

HBO’s Catherine the Great limited series is gearing up to be one hell of a royal affair. It stars the magnificent Helen Mirren, who once played Elizabeth I in a different HBO miniseries, as another strong female leader. This time around she’s playing Princess Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, or as history knows her, Catherine the Great. Watch the new trailer below:

The trailer above gives us a quick run through the latter part of Catherine’s reign, the whole of which could politely be described as “politically and sexually charged.” It’s true that she had a lot of lovers, and she bestowed great gifts on them. She also faced down over a dozen uprisings during her time on the throne, but came out the other end still standing. Her’s is a spectacular story, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what HBO makes of it.

But seriously, Catherine’s story is fascinating. The lovers, the battles, the drama, and did you know that she overthrew her husband in a coup? I think learning the actual history makes watching shows like this more fun.

And obviously Helen Mirren is a huge get. It’s hard to tear your eyes from the screen when she’s on it.
