Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe concluded with Avengers: Endgame, with old heroes exiting the story and new ones coming on. What’s next? Everything.
Naturally, Marvel is planning a slew of new movies, including one starring Game of Thrones siblings Richard Madden and Kit Harington. It’ll also be bringing a bunch of TV shows into the mix, all of them to debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. (RIP, Marvel Netflix Universe.) There’s Loki, where the titular trickster god travels through time and space making mischief. There’s WandaVision, which sounds pleasantly bonkers. There’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which probably doesn’t need much description. It’s all right there in the title.
And there’s Hawkeye, a series all about Jeremy Renner’s archery-loving superhero. He’s long kind of been the “other” Avenger — there are only so many ways to make a guy who shoots arrows seem imposing next to a Norse god and a green rage monster and whatnot — but he tries, dammit. Why shouldn’t he have his own show?
Today, The Hollywood Reporter has it that Marvel is looking at Hailee Steinfeld to play Kate Bishop, Hawkeye’s protégé in the mysterious art of shooting arrows real good. Sarcastic and brave, Bishop is a fan favorite in the comics, where she eventually took on the Hawkeye mantle. Marvel will have some comics to draw from for this show.
And Steinfeld is a good pick. She’s made waves in movies like Ender’s Game, Pitch Perfect and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, not to mention all the success she’s had in her pop music career. I think I’ll always remember her as the no-nonsense Mattie Ross from 2010’s True Grit, though:
The way The Hollywood Reporter writes about it, this isn’t a sure thing yet, but it’s an excellent choice.
Disney+ drops on November 12. The Hawkeye series will be along later, in the fall of 2021.
