Wait, Captain America was HOW old at the end of Avengers: Endgame?

Avengers: Endgame forced plenty of Marvel fans to say farewell to their favorite characters when it hit theaters this summer. Among the major characters whose storylines came to an abrupt — and often tragic — end were Black Widow, Iron Man and Captain America. Of course, Captain America received a more satisfying ending than most, traveling back in time to live out his life with Peggy Carter.

Steve Rogers accomplishes this by volunteering to go back in time to return the items the Avengers took during their foray into the past earlier in the film. But while Bruce Banner, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes wait for him to return, he misses his time stamp and reappears in the present day as a much older version of himself.

Fans have had plenty of questions about Cap’s ending — including how exactly the time travel aspect of it worked — and it looks like they’ve finally gotten an answer to one of them: How old is Steve Rogers during that final Avengers: Endgame scene?

As it turns out, Rogers is 106 years old when he passes the torch to Sam and departs from the MCU once and for all. Jen Underdahl, the special effects producer for the film, revealed this during an interview with WIRED. Naturally, a fair amount of work went into making actor Chris Evans look far older than he actually is — or, in the words of Underdahl, to give him that “106-year-old super soldier look.”

Living to see 106 is no easy feat, but we suppose that super-soldier serum would help with that. Even with all the digital touch-ups and the older body double, though, Cap looks good for his age. We certainly wouldn’t have guessed he was quite that old at the end of the film.

Unfortunately, neither his age nor his looks change anything about Cap’s ending. The Russo Brothers and Evans himself have confirmed that the actor has finished with the role. On the bright side, we have plenty of new storylines to look forward to in the coming years, including Sam Wilson’s, the next Captain America.
