Sophie Turner’s near-identical Game of Thrones stand-in speaks

Sophie Turner may not have an actual twin, but boy, this may be as close as it gets. As reported by the Irish Mirror, an Irish woman by the name of Laura Butler shares striking similarities to Turner. And when I say striking, I mean eerily identical.

This came in handy when Butler worked as Turner’s stand-in during the final season of Game of Thrones. Take a look:

If you looked at this picture and couldn’t tell the difference between the two women, don’t worry–neither could some members of the cast and crew. Even Turner’s husband, Joe Jonas mistook Butler for Turner one day. “My first day on set was Sophie’s first day back too, and a lot of people were like I haven’t seen you in a long time and the breakfast tent that we used was the same as the cast and production tent,” Burler said. “Someone came over and said, ‘congratulations on your engagement’ and I was like, ‘sorry?’. They didn’t realise.”

"A lot of the people working behind the scenes did a double-take at me and joked that I even walk like her…There was another time when I was on set and Maisie Williams came on and looked at me and then looked at Sophie and was shocked at how similar and alike we were."

Fans also approached her mistaking her for the Game of Thrones actress, and that was before she worked on the show. “We got off one of the rollercoasters [at Disneyland] and there was a family and the dad waited for me until I got off to ask me if I was her,” Butler remembered. “I said I wasn’t, but a few people took pictures of me. I just thought it was quite funny and it didn’t bother me at all.”

And she and the other stand-ins got a lot of attention from fans while filming scenes in Seville. “For that week [the attention] was so constant I do feel really sorry for the cast in a way. They obviously have amazing lives but no privacy, so I do see how hard it must be for them.”

At the same time, Butler and Turner obviously aren’t identical, at least out of costume. Remember: Turner has natural blonde hair. She only gets the red when she puts on the Sansa wig. “I think it’s more the character than Sophie herself, if that makes sense,” Butler said. “I’m not sure if it’s the hair colour. But she even said herself, ‘oh, this is a bit weird’.”

Sophie Turner seemed happy to have her double around, if Butler’s Instagram page is any indication.

“The first day I met her was her first day back on set,” Butler said. “It was just brief because there was a lot of work to do. It was a quick hello and saying how strange it was because of how alike we looked. As we went on we chatted a bit more and I got to know her a bit more. She was always really friendly and really nice and chatty to me.”

According to Butler, she and Turner even have the same measurements. You can see her onscreen standing in as Sansa during episodes like “The Long Night,” although good luck spotting Butler from Turner.

It pays to be Sophie Turner’s doppelgänger. Literally.
