Sometime soon, the History Channel will bring us the final season of Vikings, its bloody medieval drama. Fans are wondering if we’ll see the return of one of the show’s three remaining OG characters, Rollo (Clive Standen).

Rollo, along with Lagertha and Floki, have been a part of the series since its inception. Given the show’s high body count, them lasting this long is impressive. Speaking to Cinemablend, showrunner Michael Hirst gave fans hope…maybe:

"Well, if I could tease that out a little bit. I would say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ But Rollo’s re-appearance will be a huge surprise, as indeed it was rather a surprise to me. But I’ll leave it to that. I don’t want to be too evasive, but the answer in the long-term is both ‘yes’ and ‘no.’"

Sounds like one of the Seer’s riddles.

We haven’t seen Rollo since midway through season 5, when the now-Frankish royal revealed he believed himself to be Bjorn’s father, not his uncle. After failing to convince either Bjorn or Lagertha of this, Rollo departed, never to be seen or mentioned again.

Still, given the large part Rollo has played in the series, especially early on, its hard to imagine we wouldn’t get some sort of closure with the character. He could always show up in flashbacks, but considering Rollo’s power and influence — plus his interest in resolving some of the issues between Ragnar’s sons — a direct role seems more likely. Hopefully we’ll also get some sort of resolution of Rollo’s claim about being Bjorn’s father, and of his undying love for Lagertha. Rollo has lots of unfinished business!

Also, let’s not forget that Vikings is very loosely based on actual history. In the real world, Rollo’s descendants — the Normans — eventually conquer the whole on England. Surely their progenitor deserves a little more time onscreen?
