Episode 402: “Last Supper”

Where “Masada” was packed with action that moved the plot forward, “Last Supper” slows things down a bit, although it doesn’t skimp on the action. From a hilarious car chase to Jesse attempting to use his powers on non English speaking opponents, there is violence galore in “Last Supper,” but nothing that really feels like it’s really getting us somewhere.

This is still a great episode, but with only eight episodes left after this, the show feels a little like it’s spinning its wheels, just like the ones on Agent Featherstone’s tiny car as she pursues her prey up a hill that proves too steep.

Jesse begins hitchhiking to the Penis Rock, but is quickly side tracked by a small boy who attempts to rob him, because the former porn star truck driver giving Jesse a lift wasn’t distracting enough. Choosing to be generous, Jesse gives the boy his wallet and boots and sets off across the sands in only a pair of socks. He’s quickly picked up by a local on a camel who is almost immediately shot by someone else on their own camel despite Jesse’s attempt to use the Word of God. The shooter doesn’t speak English, leading to a scene where both riders and their camels die.

Nevertheless, Jesse finally arrives at the airport, ready to fly to Australia, but don’t you know it, he left his father’s lighter in the porn star’s truck. He returns to retrieve it only to see what looks like a vampire clutching the child thief from earlier in the episode.

Jesse appears later on a plane to Australia, once again wearing his boots. I’m sure we’ll find out what exactly happened between him and the kid and vampire later, although I’m not sure I really care. This late in the game, do we have time for another house of vampires? Take me to Penis Rock already!

Meanwhile, Tulip attempts to break into Masada from the outside, leading to a car chase where new ally Kamal drives Tulip’s car through dozens of Grail agents in their woefully undersized cars. And while Tulip does that, Cassidy is trying to break out from the inside. Tulip manages to disguise herself and gain entry as an injured Grail agent, but Cassidy’s end of this is far more entertaining.

Cassidy manages to chew his own leg off, a la Saw. Once free, he somehow manages to find the Grail’s secret drug stash, leading to a hilarious elevator ride where he’s basically a talking cloud of white powder. However, Frankie easily recaptures Cass, and its back to the rack for our favorite vampire.

But all those foreskins aren’t going to waster, as Herr Starr has them sewn onto his head as a new ear? Honestly, I don’t know what’s going on there.

The episode closes as God sips a Diet Dr. Pepper and plays with figurines representing Jesse’s journey so far. Do those figurines actually have an effect on Jesse is doing? I’m too distracted by Herr Starr playing with Cassidy’s foreskins to give it much thought.

The gleefully entertaining “Last Supper” has plenty of the off-beat and dark humor we’ve come to expect from Preacher, but it still felt a bit like it was stalling. Most shows are cramming in as much as possible in their final seasons, but this felt like an early series episode to me, especially for Jesse. Cassidy, at least, feels like he might be heading for the villainous turn he takes in the comics, but despite spending the entire episode traveling, Jesse felt like he was standing still.

Random Observations

  • We haven’t seen much from the Saint of Killers so far, only a brief scene with Arseface, but he could come in handy for any showdown with the Grail.
  • Likewise, after taking over Hell last season, Hitler has been absent in the first two episodes, but I’m thinking he has a part to play in the end game.
