In the finale of Star Trek: Discovery season 2, the crew of the USS Discovery followed Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) through a wormhole she created with the newly constructed Red Angel suit. That jump propelled them thousands of years into the future, where the self-aware computer, Control, could not find them.

Saru (Doug Jones) is one of Burnham’s closest friends aboard the Discovery, as well as its acting captain. Jones is very excited to see how this plays out. Speaking to Collider at the Saturn Awards, Jones confirmed that the team is about a third of the way through filming season 3. So what can fans expect when the show returns?

“We jumped to the future at the end of season 2,” he said. “This is a big deal. We’ve boldly gone where no Star Trek series has gone before…So we’re gonna see what happens in the future. What condition is the Federation in? We’re gonna find out when we land.”

"What happens to me and my rank? I’m a Commander, but I’m also acting Captain of the ship because we lost all our captains now. I take the ship and so, do I get to keep the Captain’s chair? Do I have to give it away to another Federation/ Starfleet captain in the future? We’re gonna find out all that when we get there."

I’m definitely exciting thinking about season 3. Will there even be a Starfleet Command when the Discovery gets to the future?

What we don’t know could fill an unexplored planet, but what we do know is there will be a new, mysterious character introduced named Cleveland “Book” Booker, played by David Ajala.

Book is described as “smart and capable.” He possesses the “kind of natural charm and reckless attitude that gets him into trouble almost as often as it gets him out of it.” I don’t think Book and Saru — a known stickler for the rules — will get along very well.

For now, there’s no target date for when Discovery season 3 will premiere, but with production a third of the way done, I’m guessing it’ll land somewhere in the middle of 2020.
