Doctor Who: Mission to the Unknown trailer and release date revealed!
By James Aggas
A long lost classic is returning next week, and you can catch a glimpse of it right now in the trailer for the remake of the lost Doctor Who episode, Mission to the Unknown!
Well, this is exciting news! As recently revealed on the official Doctor Who YouTube channel, a date has finally been revealed on when we can expect to see the recreation of the lost episode, Mission to the Unknown! And it’s coming sooner than you might think, as the full episode will be released on YouTube on October 9th!
For those of you who are unaware, Mission to the Unknown was originally made during Doctor Who‘s third season. One of the only episodes not to feature the Doctor or his companions at all, the episode was designed to be an extended teaser for the twelve-part epic, The Daleks’ Master Plan!
Sadly, like many other classic Sixties stories, the episode has been lost for decades. The only thing that survives of the original story is the audio, thanks to the dedication of the fans back then.
Complete remake
And it’s through fan dedication that the story is being brought back in a visual medium again. Thanks to several hard working students at University College of Lancashire, the episode has been completely remade.
The ambitious project was announced earlier this year by Peter Purves, who played First Doctor companion Steven Taylor. What made the news so promising was the fact that Purves himself was extremely excited about it.
Judging by the trailer, it’s easy to see why. The episode looks extremely authentic, following as close to how it would have been made back in the Sixties as possible – including shooting it in black and white. And that’s exactly what you want from something like this: authenticity.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
The voice of the Daleks
On top of that, the episode will also feature Nicholas Briggs as the voice of the Daleks. For close to twenty years – even before Doctor Who came back on television – Nicholas Briggs has been the definitive voice of the Daleks for the twenty-first century, thanks to his work for both Big Finish and the New Series. As someone who’s clearly a huge Dalek fan himself – a man who created his own Dalek spin-off series with Dalek Empire – it’s actually not surprising to see him involved in something like this. It’s definitely a huge bonus for the project.
What’s also exciting is how much the BBC are fully supporting this remake. While Purves himself was clearly extremely supportive of it, I wasn’t sure if the same would be true of the BBC, so it’s nice to see the first trailer for it on their official YouTube channel for Doctor Who. This is clearly a project with a lot of promise, and I can’t wait to watch it next week!
