Star Trek: Picard star Jonathan Del Arco shares behind-the-scenes video
By Corey Smith
Star Trek: Picard, a show all about the further adventures of one of Starfleet’s most beloved captains, warps onto CBS All Access next year. The prospect of a show all about Jean-Luc Picard, with Patrick Stewart back in the main role, already has me feeling nostalgic long before the show airs.
And while we aren’t quite sure what Picard will get up to, we know the series will feature a lot of his most ruthless enemy: the Borg. To start, Star Trek: Voyager’s Jeri Ryan will return to the role of Seven of Nine. Also returning is Next Generation’s Jonathan Del Arco, who played the Borg Hugh. Celebrating Star Trek’s birthday last week, Del Arco teased Hugh’s new look in a behind the scenes video. Try not to get claustrophobic.
Seriously, acting seems like a lot of fun, but count me out of ever having to sit in a chair that long to have makeup applied. I can barely sit still for a haircut.
At any rate, Del Arco confirm that Hugh will have a new look for the new show, but didn’t reveal what exactly that meant. Here he is in The Next Generation:
Nov. 2, 2015 – CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new “Star Trek” television series in January 2017. The brand-new “Star Trek” will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.

For those in need of a refresher, Hugh’s last appearance was in 1993’s “Descent.” Hugh was a former Borg drone who after being cut off from the Borg collective by the crew of the Enterprise discovered a sense of individuality he didn’t have before. Hugh would go on to start a revolution of sorts among the collective, preaching the value of individual thought to the Borg.
In contrast to Seven of Nine, who was mostly human in appearance at the end of Voyager, Hugh remained fully Borg in appearance the last time we saw him. Still, with Seven appearing even more human in previews for Picard, it’s not hard to imagine Hugh following suit.
The return of these important Borg characters makes a lot of sense given Picard’s personal background with the Collective. The Borg were always one of the franchise’s most thrilling antagonists, regardless of what show they appeared on. That said, I’m still holding out hope for Jonathan Frakes to have a major presence as Will Riker.
Star Trek: Picard will come out sometime in 2020.
