Episode 205: “Tern Haven”

The Roy family descends on Tern Haven, the palatial home of the Pierce family, in order to impress them and convince them to sell PMG (Pierce Media Group). Things don’t go as planned.

The Pierces, who’s ethical and political views differ greatly from the Roys’, consider the other family “barbarians storming the gate.” The plan is to let Tom take the fall for ATN’s perceived political problems, making him the most unwanted guest at the party. Shiv forces an announcement that she’s taking over Wastar Royco, much to her father’s chagrin.

This was a fun and often times very uncomfortable episode to sit through. Let’s get into the winners and losers of “Tern Haven.”

Winners:

  • Connor Roy makes a surprise appearance on the winner’s list. Everyone knows Connor is running for President of the United States, and the Pierces wanted to know how he intended to run his campaign. Connor withstood their scrutiny and came out with a strong connection to a very rich and powerful family.
  • Kendall had a good time at Tern Haven, getting high as f**k and making a connection with his Pierce counterpart. Nothing brings people together like blow, vodka, and helicopter rides. Plus he secured a yes vote from a powerful PMG shareholder.
  • Speaking of the Pierce family, Cherry Jones as Nan Pierce and Holly Hunter as Rhea Jarrell — PMG’s CEO — were absolutely delightful to watch. Nan was a formidable foe for Logan, and Rhae commanded every room she entered. I’d totally watch a Succession spinoff with these two women at the center.
  • The entire Roy family for making a rockstar entrance to Tern Haven. They do love their sleek black helicopters.
  • Shiv had a very topsy-turvy episode. She forced an announcement that Logan had chosen her to take over for him, which helped along the acquisition.
  • Logan gets a huge win because his deal to acquire PMG went through…

Losers:

  • …but then again, Logan was furious Shiv told everyone the news at dinner, and when Nan Pierce told Logan the deal would only go through if he publicly announced Shiv as the new CEO. Shiv went through a lot of emotions tonight, from nervous to anxious to mad to sad about not really having her father’s support.
  • Roman has a sex problem and he hoped his girlfriend would support him…but when he wanted to have sex with a dead woman, the fantasy became much more than she could handle. And to make it so much worse, Roman went to Gerri’s room and masturbated in the bathroom while she insulted him from the other side of the door. Roman is a weird dude, you guys.

“Tern Haven” was a great episode. The Roy family is always entertaining when put under a spotlight. I’d watch it again just for that dinner scene.

I still think the showrunners are setting us up for a Kendall suicide attempt. If Shiv’s announcement wasn’t enough, he’s still hitting the hard stuff. I’m worried he’s going to go out with a huge bang.
