Deadpool writers plan for his integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Walt Disney purchased Fox Entertainment last year, which could mean a whole new era for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For a while, Fox has controlled the movie rights to popular characters in the Marvel canon, from Wolverine to the Fantastic Four. Now, they’re all back under one roof.

Then there’s the case of Deadpool, the ultra violent (and ultra profitable) merc with a mouth. The Deadpool franchise hardly seems like a fit at the House of Mouse, but Disney isn’t likely to leave such a popular character behind. But is there a chance that the movies could be watered down? Series writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick told Den of Geek fans have nothing to worry about. Said Wenick:

"We’re just waiting for the word from on high. There’s a lot to be sorted out, like how Deadpool fits into the Marvel Universe with the other characters and into the release schedule of the MCU. Then it’s, do the X-Men get in there at some point? Fantastic Four? There’s a lot to be sorted out and I think we’re all getting a much needed rest from Deadpool – Ryan and us and everybody."

There are indeed a ton of issues to be sorted out before the characters can be integrated into the MCU. For example, if the X-Men are coming, what have the mutants being doing this whole time? But it’s good to hear that Disney doesn’t plan on shelving Ryan Reynolds’ profane take on the character.

Reese chimed in as well, assuring fans that little will change in Wade Wilson’s world. “The promise is that there will be more Deadpool,” says Reese. “He will live in the R-rated universe that we’ve created, and hopefully we’ll be allowed to play a little bit in the MCU sandbox as well and incorporate him into that. We’ve just got to land on the right idea and once we do, I think we’ll be off to the races. We wake up thinking about Deadpool and we go to sleep thinking about Deadpool, so there will be another Deadpool and we just have to make it the right way.” Cheers to that.

But how far are these two from finding the right idea? Wernick said the duo doesn’t have anything specific in mind as of yet. “We never had a pitch,” he admitted. “We never got that far. I think it was just because we were still in post-Deadpool 2 exhaustion, plus the merger was really… it was announced at a certain time, but it had been in the works for almost a year before it was announced and we all knew it. So there was just no point really. Knowing that there was going to be a regime change was getting too far down a path and we all realized that.”

Okay, so let’s say a Deadpool 3 does happen; who would Wernick like to pair the character with?

"Well, I always wanted it to be Captain America, Chris Evans as Captain America. We thought there’s no better straight foil for Deadpool, because Deadpool’s all about foils. Usually it’s the peripheral characters who are wacky and the leads are more sane. Deadpool’s so wacky, you have to surround him with more sane people – Colossus is a great example,  a stern kind of by-the-book guy. Captain America, to me it would’ve been the perfect character."

Given the events of Avengers: Endgame, Wernick may need to adjust his plan a bit, but we can still dream right?

Again, Wernick sounds optimistic. “We’ll have to sort that out. But that was always my dream. Spider-Man can also be super fun cause he’s a young guy who Deadpool could maybe mentor or something in a mad way. The long story short is the Marvel Universe is a very rich, deep universe. With Deadpool, we were confined a little bit with certain villains, certain possible partners, but in the MCU it’s going to blow up and it’s just a question about finding the perfect foils.”

Spider-Man and Deadpool together sounds like all kinds of trouble, especially with Tom Holland and company back on board. The possibilities are endless with the character now a part of the MCU proper.

My vote? Dr. Strange and Deadpool team up to fight a band of demonic clowns terrorizing the midwest. Make it happen Marvel.
