Rick and Morty, the world’s most beloved cartoon about a super-genius scientist and his hapless grandson going on adventures throughout time and space, is returning to Adult Swim on November 10 for a fourth season. The last new episode aired in 2017, and the show’s fan base — who have hopefully calmed down a bit since then — are ravenously awaiting new material.
Unfortunately, they’ll only be getting five new episodes to start, the first half of the new season. Presumably, the back five will air after the holidays. And after that, fans will likely never have to wait this long between seasons again. Adult Swim has ordered 70 new episodes from creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, so expect them to come out much more regularly.
And here’s more good news: the official Rick and Morty Twitter account has released the titles for those first five episodes. Have a look!
Unsurprisingly, the titles are jam-packed with pop culture references. “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat” references the Tom Cruise sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow; expect some time travel. “The Old Man and the Seat” is a reference to the book The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, about a guy who has trouble catching fish. The possibilities are endless.
“One Crew Over the Crewcoo’s Morty” is a reference to the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, about how a stay in a mental hospital crushes Jack Nicholson’s spirit, and “Rattlestar Ricklactica” a reference to the show Battlestar Galactica. Finally, “Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim’s Morty” is a play on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Gong gong.
Oh, and let’s not forget that the whole reveal is a parody of how Stranger Things announces its new episode titles.
Six pop culture references for the price of five!
Man, Stranger Things is on the brain lately. The Simpsons also parodied it for its latest Treehouse of Horror special:
Anyway, it’s hard to know what order these episodes will air in, but Rick and Morty is usually pretty light on serialization, so it may not matter much.
