Screencap breakdown: The final Rise of Skywalker trailer

Last night, Disney dropped the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Starring Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, John Boyega as Finn and Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, the film will be the ninth and final installment in the storied Skywalker Saga.

There’s lots to unpack from the trailer, so follow along as we break it down with beautiful HD screengrabs. First, let’s get into the zone with a look at the movie’s official poster:

Newcomers Naomi Ackie as Jannah, Kerri Russell as Zori Bliss, and BB-8’s new droid pal Dio all feature on the poster. Billy Dee Williams is there too, but Lando Calrissian needs no introduction.

Also, here’s the first of four collector’s edition IMAX posters:

Gorgeous. Disney/IMAX will release three more posters the closer we get to the movie’s premiere. We’ll see this scene show up in the trailer proper…

We start with Rey training on a forested planet.

Rey’s using that helmet to hone her Force powers. It has a bast-guard that drops down, rendering her blind as a tiny ball darts around and fires laser beams at her, reminding us of how Luke trained in A New Hope.

The next couple of shots are of Rey running around and leaping over chasms, as well as jumping through a massive ship, much like she did as a scavenger in The Force Awakens.

“It’s an instinct,” we hear Finn say. “A feeling. The Force brought us together.”

Poe Dameron and Lando Calrissian lead a meeting of Resistance forces as an unnamed Mon Calamari (Admiral Ackbar’s species) listens intently. Mon Cal are known for being skilled shipbuilders, and if the Resistance wants to stand a fighting chance, it will need their help.

Below, we’ve got Rose Tico, Lieutenant Connix, and

Meriadoc Brandybuck

Dominic Monaghan character staring at something offscreen. “We’re not alone,” says Finn. “Good people will fight if we lead them.”

Poe, Finn, and Chewbacca pose for their album cover.

Here’s the Resistance fleet. Check out the ship to the right of the Millennium Falcon. That, folks, is the Ghost — the ship flown by the Rebels in Star Wars Rebels. It also made a live-action appearance in Rogue One.

Speaking of cool ships, did you notice the Hammerhead Corvette class ship crashing through the treetops? That type of ship is the same model Princess Leia used to try and escape Darth Vader in the opening scene of A New Hope.

Although Carrie Fisher is no longer with us, director J.J. Abrams is taking unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to give us a little more of General Leia.

I’m not crying, Rey is…okay, I’m crying too.

You’ve seen the teasers showing Rey arriving at the Death Star crash site on Endor. Now see how she and Kylo Ren come together for what we can only hope is a massively cool lightsaber duel.

“People keep telling me they know me,” Rey says. “No one does.” What say you, Kylo? “But I do.” Reylo rockets activate.

Both characters seem to be there looking for someone. Who might that be? Maybe this throne will jog your memory:

Abrams used the original Return of the Jedi artwork by Star Wars artist Ralph McQuarrie to design Palpatine’s throne. He’s giving a monologue throughout the trailer.

Nailed it.

Here’s something odd: Who are Rey and Kylo Ren teaming up to fight against, and why does Rey have a dagger?

And also why does he crumble like he’s made of rock?

Mark this next shot one of the most gorgeous ones from the entire sequel trilogy:

Plenty of folk have already drawn comparisons:

The rumor is that C-3PO has some deeply buried coordinates to the location of a powerful item that can help Rey win the war against the First Order. That lil’ guy on Threepio’s shoulder is supposed to help him find it…only it will cost him his memory. That’s why, according to this theory, he wants to take “one last look at his friends.” There won’t be a dry eye in the house.

Finally, it looks like this ice-covered location is where Emperor Palpatine is hiding, and may very well be the spot for the final battle.

A Star Destroyer breaking through the ice in another evocative shot:

Below, a force of Resistance fighters being led by Jannah, Finn, Poe and BB-8 charge forward. Are they riding space horses on top of a Star Destroyer?

And finally, a look at our heroes gathered on the Milennium Falcon:
