The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars TV show, premiere on November 12 on Disney+, the same day Disney’s new streaming service goes live. On Monday night, the Mouse dropped a surprise trailer. Let’s break it down with the magic of GIFs!
The Mandalorian is set directly after the fall of Emperor Palpatine’s Galactic Empire. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, a Mandalorian bounty hunter (Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal) hunts down and captures marks for Greef Carga (Carl Weathers), the operator of a bounty hunting guild.
The Mandalorian also must deal with remnants of the old Empire, like Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and his private army.
Werner Herzog’s character narrates the trailer, adding a gravitas that only someone who was once shot during an interview and just kept on talking could add. “It’s a world more peaceful since the revolution,” Herzog says. It is a shame that your people suffered.” I’m taking this to mean the Mandalorian people were hit hard after the fall of the Empire.
Next, we have the Mando in a cave looking for two Trandoshans. They could be rival bounty hunters or bounties themselves. Bossk from The Empire Strikes Back was a Trandoshan bounty hunter.
“But bounty hunting is a complicated profession,” says Herzog. Are those the Trandoshans in carbonite?
Here’s the Mandalorian’s ship, the Razor Crest. “They said you were coming,” Herzog continues. “They said you were the best in the parsec.”
And now it’s time to kick Stormtrooper ass!
Next, we’ve got a montage of the Mandalorian blasting Stormtroopers, taking down bounties in a cantina, and attempting to wrangle a huge mud-covered beast with one horn. I’ve done some digging, and the creature has yet to be named in Star Wars canon, so we’ll call him Space Rhino.

StarWars.com describes the creature like this: “A row of crooked teeth and a massive horn make this fearsome beast a force to be reckoned with. By the looks of it, not even the Mandalorian can tame it.”
Here we have the Razor Crest being chased and fired on by an unknown ship. It’s hard to tell, but it almost looks like a Gauntlet class ship the Mandalorian fighters used during the Clone Wars and the following war between the Rebellion and the Galactic Empire.
Herzog comes back with more ominous dialogue: “Mandalorian, look outside, they are waiting for you.” We see the Mandalorian landing the Razor Crest on a ridge where Greef Carga and his henchmen await him.
We then see Gina Carano as ex-rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, Bill Burr firing a shoulder-mounted laser cannon as well as akimbo blasters, and the droid IG-11 spinning in circles and mowing down Stormtroopers. We get Moff Gideon and his troops, and finally, Julia Jones’ Omera actually touching the Mandalorian’s helmet as if she’s about to pull it off.
Finally, we see the Mandalorian use a jetpack to fly onto Moff Gideon’s TIE Fighter, which is awesome. At last, we finally hear him speak, replying to Herzog. “Yeah? Good.”
This show looks absolutely incredible and I can’t wait until November 12.
