Trailer Party: Soul, Wendy, The Color out of Space and more

There are movies. So many of them! And a lot of them have trailers. Let’s watch some.

First up, Pixar has released a teaser for its next masterpiece: Soul, about an aspiring musician named Nathan Gardner (Jamie Foxx) who…whoa, he dies? Dark, Pixar.

Of course, that’s not the end. In a twist that reminds me of Inside Out, the bulk of the movie will involve Gardner’s soul being sent to a kind of purgatory where he meets a far more cynical soul played by Tina Fey.

God bless Pixar for continuing to make compelling original features. Soul comes out on June 19, 2020.

Next up, Fox Searchlight has released a trailer for Wendy, the new film from Benh Zeitlin, director of Beasts of the Southern Wild. It’s Peter Pan, but told from Wendy’s perspective.

Retellings of Peter Pan are a dime a dozen, but it’s pretty clear that Zeitlin — and his younger sister Eliza, with whom he cowrote the screenplay — is passionate about it, so what’s one more? Wendy is out in theaters on February 28, 2020.

And thus concludes the uplifting portion of our program. From here on out it’s all horror movies, starting with Color out of Space, Richard Stanley’s adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s story about an alien presence that comes to Earth in a meteorite and terrorizes a rural family.

Apparently, Stanley’s mother would read him Lovecraft stories to help him get to bed when he was young. Why, Richard Stanley’s mom? Why would you do that?

You can see Nicolas Cage in Color out of Space on January 24, 2020.

Sticking with horror, director Leigh Whannell has a new take of The Invisible Man. The spin: Elizabeth Moss is the wife of an abusive scientist husband. He commits suicide and leaves her a ton of money, provided she proves that she’s not “mentally incompetent.” Then weird things start happening around her. You do the invisible math.

The Invisible Man appears in theaters on February 28, 2020.

And finally, there’s a new trailer for Servant, M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ about a spooky baby, or rather, a spooky mom and a creepy nanny:

Servant is coming sooner than the rest of these, on November 28. Although it’s on Apple TV+, so it’s hard to know how many people will see it.

Next. Neil Gaiman is already working on Sandman season 2. dark
