4. Rest and Ricklaxation – Season 3 Episode 6

This episode doesn’t really deliver the laughs like you would expect. Instead it delves into some of the themes particularly humanity’s toxicity and what would happen if we removed the things that we consider bad.

Rick and Morty get their “toxins” removed at an intergalactic spa (this episode also features one of the best cold opens of the series where we see a stressed-out Rick and Morty have a breakdown in the ship) but the toxins were more than just stress or emotions; they become living beings. And the machine doesn’t just remove general toxins, it removes the thing about yourself that YOU think is toxic.

In doing so, the machine reveals how much Rick truly does care for Morty, and how much of an insufferable jackass Morty would be without his insecurities and self-doubt. Like, Wolf of Wall Street-level asshattery.

3. MeeSeeks and Destroy – Season 1, Episode 3

“I’m Mr. Meeseeks, look at me!” is forever etched into my brain. This was probably the episode that really let viewers know that Rick and Morty could not be boxed into a single description as a series. Mr. Meeseeks is a creature that lives to serve and die, as quickly as possible. Every time you hit the blue button on the Meeseeks box, a new friend pops out. You give them a simple task to help you with, and once they’ve accomplished the task, they poof away in delight!

Mr. Meeseeks helps Beth and Summer with their tasks, no problem. But Jerry asked to take two strokes off his golf game, and it turns out that’s a little more than a Meeseeks can handle. Before long, the Meeseeks are conjuring Meeseeks and now there’s a small army of angry beings who just want to die but can’t until Jerry gets better at his golf game. So they turn to violence.

Oh, also, Morty gets molested by a regal Jellybean. Despite that, this episode has a surprisingly upbeat ending for Beth and Jerry.
