What deleted scenes are on the upcoming Game of Thrones boxset?

The home video release of the final season of Game of Thrones comes out on December 3, as does Game of Thrones: The Complete Series. Both collections will feature deleted scenes from season 8, something we’ve heard a lot about ever since the scripts for the last six episodes became available to read at the Writers Guild Foundation library in Los Angeles.

The deleted scenes are listed on the British Board of Film Classification website. Let’s see what’s in store for us!

“Soup in the trenches” (01:35)

This sounds like it was cut from “The Long Night.” Perhaps folk were supplying the soldiers with rations during breaks in the fight against the White Walkers. It sounds like it relates to this next cut scene:

“Davos and Fergus” (00:56)

Fergus (Seamus O’Hara) was a new character introduced in season 8 who briefly appeared in “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” when Davos was serving him soup.

It sounds like Fergus had a bit of an extended role in the original edit. Being a character we didn’t know very well, I’m guessing some of his stuff was cut for time.

Speaking of minor characters with expanded parts…

“Alys Karstark” (02:05)

Alys Karstark was introduced in season 7, one of the children of lords who fought against Jon Snow at the Battle of the Bastards whom he forgave.

You can see Alys helping protect Bran during he Battle of Winterfell, but in the original script, she had a bit more to do. There was a whole thing where she and her men were taken down by child wights. It sounds pretty similar to what happened to Karsi the wildling in “Hardhome,” so I’m fine with it being cut, but perhaps we’ll see it in this deleted scene.

“Tyrion and Sansa in the Crypts” (02:00)

In “The Long Night,” Tyrion and Sansa hide behind a statue in the Stark crypts once the dead start to rise, leap out from behind, and then…we just kind of see them take refuge with a bunch of other survivors. It was an odd moment.

In the original script, they got more of an action hero moment where they save Gilly and Missandei from a couple of attacking wights, Sansa using the dragonglass dagger Arya gave her earlier. When I read about that, it felt kind of out of character to me, so I’m okay with it not being included in the episode itself. Could be cool to watch what it would have looked like, though.

“Grey Worm and Missandei at the feast” (01:43)

This is the deleted scene I’m most looking forward to. In the original script for “The Last of the Starks,” there’s a whole mini-drama playing out between Daenerys, Grey Worm and Missandei at the feast following the Battle of Winterfell. Deanerys notices Missandei stealing glances at Grey Worm, tells the ever-stoic Grey Worm that he’s earned a break and can leave the feast and rest up if he wants, and then hears out Missandei, who says she isn’t feeling well. Missandei is lying and Daenerys knows she lying — she just wants to hang with Grey Worm — but Dany still gives her leave to go after some light teasing.

It’s a cute little scene I wish had been left in. And then, after Missandei leaves, this:

"Dany is happy for her friend. But she’s also aware that everyone seems to be having fun except for her. She’s lonely and Varys clocks her loneliness…"

I think that would have helped underline Daenerys’ sense of isolation after losing Jorah, and any scene that helps us understand her state of mind ahead of “The Bells” is welcome in my book.
