Queen of Thorns (season 3)

Although she appears to be a supporting character for a majority of the series, Olenna Tyrell — also known as the Queen of Thorns — proves herself more astute at playing the game of thrones than many of the show’s leads. She winds up being a major player and making decisions that impact the entire course of the series. And she does it without attracting notice from anyone else, an impressive accomplishment in a court full of spies and backstabbers.

Of course, Olenna’s appearance does little to hint at the ruthlessness underneath. And that’s exactly the point. Her veil and embroidered dresses make her seem placid, modest and even doddering. They allow her to fit in with the rest of the court. Much like Daenerys, she uses the assumptions others make about her based on her appearance to her advantage, blending into the court so she can better manipulate its members.

When Olenna arranges to have Joffrey poisoned at his own wedding, no one ever stops to consider that she might have been behind his murder. The roses embroidered into her outfits, which are also taken from her house’s sigil, serve as a reminder that even flowers have thorns.
