Sansa’s First Wedding Gown (season 3)

Poor Sansa has had two too many weddings over the course of Game of Thrones, but at least we can all agree that she was stunningly dressed for them. The gown she wears when she’s forced to wed Tyrion Lannister is a gorgeous, golden piece that says a lot about her character at the time. During the early seasons of the show, Sansa is easily influenced by the people around her — something that’s clearly reflected in the clothing she wears.

While Sansa remains a hostage in King’s Landing, the Lannisters influence everything she does. That’s why she looks like a symbol of House Lannister when she marries one of its members, donning a golden gown that’s meant to contrast Tyrion’s red tunic, the two of them combining to form the Lannister house colors.

Her hair during her wedding is also in its signature early-season style, an up-do that fans have seen Cersei sport on multiple occasions. The fact that Sansa’s hairstyle here mimics Cersei’s doesn’t just show that she’s influenced by the other woman. It also draws parallels between Sansa and Cersei, both of whom were forced to wed someone for the sake of political alliances without being given much choice in the matter.

Sansa’s dress is also embroidered with flower patterns, something that’s likely a nod to her relationship with Margaery and Olenna Tyrell, both of whom attempt to win Sansa’s allegiance. Of course, they’re more deserving of it than the Lannisters, but the two still manipulate the girl. (Also, notice that this shot of Sansa shows the Lannisters on one side of her and the Tyrells on the other, leaving her caught between the two houses trying to use her.)
