Long Live the King (season 3)

The Red Wedding is one of the most pivotal moments in all of Game of Thrones, so it’s only fitting that the characters involved in the massacre of House Stark would be wearing some important and meaningful costumes during it. Robb’s costume specifically is interesting for several different reasons.

To start, it seems ominous that Robb would wear black to his uncle’s wedding, though we suppose the Northerners are known for their dark, dreary attire. Still, black is commonly associated with mourning — something that many were left to do after the Freys turned on the Starks. In this way, Robb’s costume almost serves as a warning. While a wedding should be a light and colorful affair, this one seemed bleak even before the stabbing started.

Robb’s also got plenty of direwolf imagery on his clothing, which is natural given his role as King in the North. He became king because he was the scion of House Stark, and lost his life because he didn’t share his power with the right person.

Another interesting tidbit about Robb’s Red Wedding attire is that we see it once more during the show’s fifth season. In a cruel twist of fate, Theon actually wears a nearly identical costume during Sansa’s wedding to Ramsay — another disastrous affair, if on a much smaller scale. That Theon’s clothing resembles Robb’s is a slap in the face to both Theon and the Starks, and it’s exactly the kind of cruel irony Game of Thrones would throw into the mix.
