The 50 most iconic looks from Game of Thrones
The Rose (season 4)
Joffrey isn’t the only one who looks stunning during the Purple Wedding. His bride, Margaery, is even more gorgeous in her dress — a gown that holds far more meaning that initially meets the eye. The gown is in one of Margaery’s preferred shades of blue, and the train is covered in roses, a not-so-subtle nod to the sigil of House Tyrell.
That Margaery’s wedding gown maintains her usual style and represents her own house instead of her husband’s is worth noting. With Sansa’s wedding dress earlier, we mentioned that it was essentially modeled after House Lannister, emphasizing that she now belonged to them. But Magaery’s gown has the opposite effect. There’s no red or gold in sight because Joffrey doesn’t exert control over her — if anything, the situation is reversed.
The back of Margaery’s dress also has what looks like wiring leading down to the train. These are meant to be the vines that the roses stem from — and if you’ve ever been near a rosebush, you’ll recall that those vines are covered in thorns. Even this feature of Margaery’s dress appears to be a bit sharp. Perhaps this little detail foreshadows what’s to come at the end of this wedding, all thanks to the seemingly rosy and pleasant House Tyrell.
