The 50 most iconic looks from Game of Thrones
Brienne’s Armor (season 4)
We don’t see many women wearing armor over the course of Game of Thrones, but Brienne of Tarth does it well enough to make up for everyone else. In fact, it’s rare to see Brienne not wearing her armor — it’s pretty much her signature. Brienne’s insistence on wearing armor everywhere is one way of many she insists on going her own way even if it means not conforming to Westerosi beauty standards for women.
While all of the women on Game of Thrones defy the roles society pushes onto them, Brienne probably does so the most outwardly. She refuses to appear feminine in any regard, just as she refuses to become a lady whose sole purpose is to marry and bear children. That’s never been Brienne on the inside. Her armor, so out of the ordinary on a woman, is basically a part of her.
As the series continues, it also becomes clear that Brienne sometimes uses her armor as a shield, and not just from swords and other weapons. Brienne seems to always be on guard when it comes to her emotions. This is why so many fans were shocked to see her show so much emotion when Jaime left for King’s Landing in season 8; Brienne is careful not to let anyone too close. With Jaime, she let her armor down.
