Sansa’s Second Wedding Dress (season 5)

Sansa’s second wedding in Game of Thrones turns out even worse than the first. But despite the disastrous results of her brief union with Ramsay Bolton, Sansa manages to look stunning as always on her wedding night, sporting a white dress that’s unlike any other costume we see her in on the show.

As Costume CO points out on her YouTube channel, Sansa’s dress for her wedding at Winterfell highlights both her Stark and Tully roots. The white, wintry color of the gown — along with the small fur cape around the shoulders — clearly represents her ties to the North and to House Stark. But if viewers look closer, they’ll also notice that the clasps on her dress are shaped like fish, referencing the sigil of her mother’s house, House Tully.

According to Clapton, the shape of Sansa’s wedding gown is also meant to mimic the shape of the gown Lyanna Stark wears in her crypt statue. That’s an interesting parallel to draw during this moment, and a strange one given that Lyanna wasn’t actually forced into her marriage the way that Sansa is. Still, fans don’t know that for certain at this point of the series.

This scene is also one of the last times that viewers see Sansa wearing white, a color that’s often associated with innocence. And it’s safe to say that Sansa’s illusions about the world and what it should be disappear fully after her time with Ramsay. While she became less naive during her Dark Sansa days, it’s with Ramsay that she fully understands that no one is coming to save her, which is where we truly see her begin to assert her autonomy.
