Cersei’s Coronation (season 6)

It just wouldn’t be a Game of Thrones coronation without some seriously stunning attire, and Cersei Lannister’s choice of clothes during “The Winds of Winter” certainly makes an impression. The Lannister queen takes her throne after eliminating her remaining enemies in King’s Landing and saying farewell to the last of her children, so it’s fitting that she’s wearing black here. She’s obviously mourning Tommen, but she’s also mourning the loss of her humanity. She’s sacrificed any of the good left in her to gain control of the Seven Kingdoms.

It’s also fitting that Cersei should have armor shoulder plates on her dress, as she’s still surrounded by enemies, even after blowing the Sept of Baelor to smithereens. Her fight to maintain her hold on the throne isn’t over yet, and she’s fully aware of it. Much like Sansa’s needle necklace, Cersei’s shoulder plates represent her willingness to fight for power and her ability to defend herself — even if it’s not in a physical sense.

Cersei’s dress here also somewhat resembles one of Tywin’s costumes from earlier in the series, having the same pattern burned into the leather. Cersei and Tywin shared the common goal of establishing a Lannister dynasty on the Iron Throne. Naturally, she’s channeling him as she accepts her crown.
