The Queen in the North (season 8)

Sansa’s final costume of the series is arguably one of Clapton’s most thought-out and elaborate pieces, and it fits well with the satisfying conclusion to her journey: becoming Queen in the North. In fact, Clapton loved this last costume so much that she’s actually in the scene where Sansa is putting it on. That hand dressing the queen in the North belongs to the costume designer.

Every aspect of Sansa’s Queen in the North outfit calls back to the path she took to get there, emphasizing her Stark roots but also weaving in bits and pieces of what she’s learned over the course of eight seasons. Her crown, naturally, is crafted in the shape of the direwolf sigil, and her dress and cloak are heavy and reminiscent of the place she’s now sworn to rule, with clear weirwood patterns referencing the religion of the North.

But Sansa’s dress also happens to be crafted from the same material as two other massively important pieces from the series: the dress Margaery wears when she’s wed to Joffrey and the gown Sansa dons during her “Dark Sansa” arc in the Vale. Both of these outfits mark significant influences on Sansa’s storyline, so it makes sense they’d be crafted from the same material.

Sansa’s plain hairstyle is one of the most exciting parts of her Queen in the North look. Although she’s always styled herself after whoever had the most influence over her at the time — whether it was Cersei, Littlefinger, Daenerys, or someone else — Sansa isn’t copying anyone during this scene. That her hair is down and fashioned after no one else’s signifies Sansa becoming her own person and a leader.
