The Khaleesi (season 1)

Daenerys quickly adapts to her role as the Khaleesi of Drogo’s Khalasar, and part of that adjustment involves changing her wardrobe to match the style of the Dothraki. As she begins to embrace her new title, her appearance starts to fall in line with what would be expected of a Khaleesi. And if we’re being honest, it’s probably one of her most interesting looks from the entire series.

The Dothraki don’t wear clothing with much extravagance, preferring practicality and ease of movement to lavish accessories and jewels. Perhaps this is why Dany continues to keep her attire simple, even as she grows into a queen and begins to adopt the styles of Westeros instead.

Her “Dothraki rags,” as Viserys calls them during season 1, enable her to ride comfortably through the grasslands on horseback, but they also help her to fit in with the rest of her adopted people, even with her light hair and complexion. Perhaps the outfit helps Daenerys find her fighting spirit. In this outfit, she meets Viserys’ threats with swift retribution, nearly taking his hand and forcing him to walk behind the khalasar during their travels.

But while it helps her come into her own, Dany’s Dothraki attire also highlights an important fact about her power early on: it’s only achieved because she’s married to a powerful man. It’s something she adopted rather than invented. Dany’s frequent assertions that she’s “the wife of the great Khal” back up that notion. She has a while to go before she finds a style that’s truly hers.
