A brand new trailer has finally been released for Series 12 of Doctor Who! What hints and clues does it contain for Jodie Whittaker’s second series as the Thirteenth Doctor?

On Saturday – the day of Doctor Who‘s fifty-sixth anniversary – we finally got what we had all been waiting for: a brand new trailer for Series 12!

As expected, the trailer shows plenty of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, as well as her three companions: Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill).

As announced last week, we also briefly see Stephen Fry and Lenny Henry, (although it has to be said, if the former sounding official and the latter shooting at the Doctor are anything to go by, we’re guessing their characters are key to the opening story). And of course, we see a variety of times and locations, including Paris during the Second World War.

But what we’re really excited to see are the monsters, and we definitely see plenty of those in this new trailer, both old and new. We see scorpion-like monsters, Judoon and, most exciting of all, Cybermen! You can see for yourself in the trailer below.

A more confident series?

So I’m not going to lie: despite admitting that Chris Chibnall’s first series as showrunner wasn’t exactly my favorite, this trailer does have me pretty pumped up for his next. There’s a lot of focus on action, generating excitement, and for giving us hints of what’s to come.

Honestly, the main thing that’s coming across from this new trailer is the impression of a more confident series. Series 11 was clearly designed to establish the new Doctor, the companions and their relationships, above everything else. Series 12 looks set to build on that, while being less afraid of using elements from the past.

I’m not against the idea of the series creating new monsters and new threats. In fact, it’s the best way for the series to move forward. But of the many original monsters created last series, there weren’t too many memorable ones, so it’s reassuring to see wonderful creations like the Judoon and the Cybermen making a return appearance.

Hints of what’s to come

But perhaps what stands out the most about the new trailer is the moment the Doctor says:

"Something’s coming for me. I can feel it."

While it’s difficult to judge anything taken out of context, there’s the strong implication that whatever’s coming for the Doctor, it’s big. Could we actually be getting a brand new arc this series? It’s very possible, especially with the opening episode being promised as one of the biggest stories ever.

Whatever happens, one thing’s for sure: Series 12 looks extremely exciting, and we can hardly wait to watch it.
