Witcher author thinks the Netflix show could be “a masterpiece”
By Dan Selcke
Netflix’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels is right around the corner, and the signs are good. The cast — which includes Henry Cavill as the titular monster hunter, Geralt of Rivia — looks solid, everyone seems very passionate about their work, and the trailer is slick:
Speaking to Wired, Sapkowski himself also sounds pretty psyched. “Yesterday I witnessed for the first time the screening of the trailer of The Witcher series, together with the fans,” he said. “I didn’t even see the pilot episode because I like being surprised. But I can say one thing: if the series will be as beautiful as the trailer, we will have a masterpiece.”
"When I see the images from the set, or the trailer, I am always amazed. Everyone asks me how I imagine Geralt and the others, or the setting of the books, even compared to what appears in the series or in video games. The truth is that I don’t visualise the characters and the scenes I write, I don’t have an image of their own in mind. All I do is put one letter after another until I have filled a page. I have no idea how they should appear on screen."
Sapkowski’s enthusiasm is notable because he’s rarely enthusiastic about anything. In fact, he has a reputation as something of a (lovable) grump, taking swipes at other fantasy shows and getting into protracted legal battles with CD Projekt Red, the makers of the popular Witcher video games. If he says one nice thing about your fantasy series, you have squeezed blood from a stone.
That said, it obviously doesn’t mean that much since he’s only talking about the trailer, which we’ve all seen. The real test will come when the first season of The Witcher debuts on December 20. Netflix already ordered a second season, so let’s hope people like it enough to want to see more.
