No, HBO wasn’t teasing anything big with “Winter is Coming” tweet
By Dan Selcke
It does not take much to excite people on the internet, particularly when it comes to Game of Thrones. For example, yesterday, the official Game of Thrones Twitter account tweeted three simple words, and the roof was immediately blown off the domicile:
“Winter is coming.” That’s the show’s catchphrase. Surely that’s nothing to get hyped about by itself?
As you can see, that is not the case. Within 24 hours of typing those words, the tweet had been liked over 400,000 times, retweeted 100,000 times, and had amassed nearly 20,000 replies. And why not? Winter is coming? You can’t just say that and let it lie! HOW is winter coming? Are you saying winter is literally coming to the northern hemisphere of the planet Earth, which we know, or are you teasing something big on the way, perhaps something about the upcoming House of the Dragon spinoff series, which is all about the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons? WHAT IS IT, HBO?
More than likely, it’s nothing. Or at least, nothing to justify over 100k replies. The next day, HBO tweeted out another message in anticipation of Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection, a home video set of the entire series, with plentiful extras. So THAT’S what they meant by “winter.” Whew.
It’s hard to control messaging on social media. You tweet three words and everyone spits back three million. It’s just part of the weird, wild ecosystem that is the internet, god bless it.
As for House of the Dragon, it’s moving forward with a cadre of storytellers in place. More as it develops.
