Giancarlo Esposito talks about his Mandalorian character, Moff Gideon
The Mandalorian on Disney+ has taken the world by storm, mainly because of the most popular character to ever be introduced into Star Wars canon — Baby Yoda — but also because it’s really really good.
Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) is part of that cast, but has yet to make an appearance on the show. Talking with Conan O’Brien, Esposito remained coy when asked if his character, Moff Gideon, was a good guy or a bad guy.
“Moff Gideon is a remnant Imperial after the Empire falls apart,” Esposito explained. “The Empire has been divvied up to these remnant Imperials who will then maintain order.” Okay, that’s not much, but we’ll take what we can get.
Esposito goes on to say his character knows everything about everyone, but no one knows how or where he gets his information. “He’s a tricky interesting human being that we don’t yet know about.” He offered similarly vague proclamations about the nature of Baby Yoda, saying that the internet’s newest darling balances “child-like wonder” with “very adult intelligence.”
But we already knew that. “We’re all very interested,” Esposito continued. “And we want the baby. What’s the reason? Why? Well, we’ll have to watch and find out.”
There are three episodes of The Mandalorian left, so if Moff Gideon is going to make any sort of impact on the show, he’ll have to show up soon. Then again, given how episodic the show has been over the last couple of episodes, he might be a one-and-done kind of villain. And yes, we’re pretty much assuming he’s a villain. This is the guy who played Gus Fring in Breaking Bad. Villains are his thing now, whether he likes it or not.
