Thanks to CBS All Access, Star Trek has made a resurgence recently. Star Trek: Discovery has been excellent for two seasons, and Star Trek: Picard — a show all about the latter day adventures of Jean-Luc Picard, with Patrick Stewart returning to his iconic role — will make its debut on January 23, next year.
And now that Viacom and CBS have merged, we’re officially going to be getting Star Trek movies again, starting with Star Trek 4, as well as an unnamed fifth film announced by ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish at the UBS Global Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference in New York, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There aren’t any details regarding the unnamed Trek film as of yet, but Star Trek 4 — with Noah Haley directing and Chris Pine as Captain Kirk — has been in gestation for awhile.
So that’s good news! Unfortunately, it looks like another long-rumored Star Trek film, an R-rated one from the mind of Quentin Tarantino, isn’t moving forward. Speaking to Consequence of Sound, the director said he’s “steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet.”
So two steps forward, one step back. And it was also reported today that CBS All Access has renewed Picard for a second season. Hopefully, that means the first is worth the watching.
