The Purge

The Mandalorian makes a number of references to an event called “The Purge.” While it isn’t yet completely clear what the exact history of “The Purge” is, let’s try to unpack what we know.

it seems probable “The Purge” refers to a “Purge of Mandalore,” when the Empire responded viciously to a Mandalorian rebellion. The Imperial forces nearly wiped out the Mandalorians as a people, enslaving their home planet and robbing its resources. When Mando brings his camtono of beskar ingots to the Armorer (Emily Swallow), she notes they bear the Galactic Empire’s insignia, which suggests the precious metal only found on Mandalore was taken after the Empire took control of their planet.

Such a history would explain how rogue handfuls of stormtroopers (perhaps units who survived the fall of the Empire due to remote postings) still retain clout with bucketfuls of Imperial-forged Beskar ingots (as is the case with the Client and his stormtrooper followers). On the other hand, there is a possibility that the “Purge” refers to Anakin Skywalker and Emperor Palpatine’s massacre of the Jedi Order in Revenge of the Sith (Palpatine’s Order 66), which happened 30 years before The Mandalorian‘s timeline.

It’s important to note that Mando’s nightmarish flashbacks (involving him as a small boy being rushed to safety by his parents during some kind of major attack) are almost certainly not depictions of “The Purge of Mandalore.” Mando’s age doesn’t line up chronologically and his memory of the Separatist B2 Super Battle Droid means the attack happened during a previously unknown operation during the Clone Wars.
