The end of an era looms as Supernatural prepares to conclude the story of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester. The show will also go out as “the longest-running sci-fi/genre series in the history of American broadcast television.”

Our wayward sons are nearly done, but will they find peace at the end of Supernatural’s 15th and final season, which premiered on The CW Television Network on October 10? At the time of writing, seven episodes have aired, and the storyline is starting to take shape. As a devout fan of the series since it debuted in 2005, it’s with great guilt and a dash of self-loathing that I say the plots of the past few seasons have sometimes floundered.

But make no mistake, where the brothers Sam and Dean go, I follow like a hellhound collecting a soul. Death, resurrection, apocalypses and literal heaven and hell; we’ve been through it all with the Winchesters. And they deserve a swan song more glorious than Castiel’s immaculate 12-year-old trench coat!

Supernatural has never shied away from bringing characters back from the dead, whether it’s in their original body, ghost form or inhabiting someone else’s “meat suit”. There’s usually a spell, demon, reaper, an angel, Death or even God himself (Rob Benedict) — who prefers the moniker, Chuck — involved. And if worst comes to worst, there’s always an alternate reality where another version of the character is waiting to cross over.

I’m coining this “the season of resurrections,” as we’ve already seen several: Lilith, Benny and the Woman in White. There are no limits as to who can come back or a shortage of great characters to choose from. I’d love to see the likes of Ellen, Jo, Charlie, Rowena and Balthazar again, to name a few. But some beloved characters deserve to return for the finale. Additionally, there are events I’d love to see happen and elements I’d want included.

Here are nine things we need for Supernatural to end on a high note:
