8. A resolution to Castiel’s bargain with The Shadow
An ominous threat hangs over lovable Castiel’s head. Think back to season 11 when we first learned about The Empty from Billie the Reaper (Lisa Berry). It’s a place that predates God and the Darkness, something that existed before everything else. Ruled over by a delightful chap called The Shadow, it’s where demons and angels sleep forever when they die, a dark, endless void of nothing. Castiel experienced the joys of The Empty and The Shadow firsthand in season 13.
In season 14, The Shadow attempted to capture Jack and take him to the void. It would’ve succeeded, too, were it not for Castiel, who bargained to take Jack’s place. The Shadow accepted his offer, but instead of taking Castiel then and there, it said it would only come and claim him when he was truly happy.
Now, Cas rarely cracks a smile and he certainly doesn’t have much to be happy about at this juncture or in the foreseeable future. Will this subplot be discarded? And if not, what could possibly make Castiel truly happy? The return of Jack? The destruction of God? Dean’s forgiveness? The Winchesters finding peace? I don’t relish the thought of anything bad happening to Castiel but I do want these questions answered.
