Yep, Colin Farrell is playing the Penguin

Director Matt Reeves is hard at work on The Batman, Warner Bros.’ latest attempt to reboot the character after Ben Affleck’s take on him didn’t quite work out. Twilight’s Robert Pattinson is stepping into the cape and cowl, joined by a menagerie of villains. We’ve got Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the RiddlerJohn Turturro as mob boss Carmine Falcone, and even a rumor of Matthew McConaughey playing Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. (Interestingly, there’s been no mention of the Joker, who recently starred in a solo movie that’s getting a lot of awards buzz.) Batman’s going to have his hands full.

And we haven’t even gotten to the end. A while back, we reported a rumor that Colin Farrell was playing the Penguin in the movie. Now, Reeves has seemingly confirmed it on Twitter:

“Wait — is that you, #Oz?” In this context, “Oz” is likely a reference to Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin’s real name. People have also spotted what they think is Farrell is Penguin costume on set; look at the photo in the bottom right-hand corner of this collage and judge for yourself:

So it looks like this is happening. On the one hand, it still feels kind of odd to have the handsome Irish actor in this role. I’m sorry; I grew up thinking of the Penguin as short and stout, so it’s taking me a while to come around.

But maybe that’s a good argument for going a different way with the character. And there is some precedent. Robin Taylor played a sexier (relatively speaking) version of the Penguin for years on Gotham.

I’m also raising an eyebrow at how many villains there are in this movie. Is it going to feel overstuffed?

I guess we’ll find out when The Batman comes out in 2021. Also on board are Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon and possibly Andy Serkis as Alfred. The whole Bat-family is here!

dark. Next. The Rise of Skywalker star Dominic Monaghan wants a “director’s cut” of the movie
