Doctor Who: New mid-series trailer offers hints of what’s to come
By James Aggas
We’ve got another teaser for Series 12 of Doctor Who, one that offers a number of clues and hints of what’s to come over the coming weeks.
Can you believe that we’re already four episodes in to Doctor Who‘s twelfth series? Already, we’re just one episode away from the halfway point. (Of course, it probably helps that two of those episodes were broadcast within just a few days of each other.)
We’ve seen plenty of trailers for the series already, but the BBC surprised us by giving us one more after the broadcast of Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror. The trailer is only half a minute long, but it does give us a few interesting glimpses of what’s to come.
Unsurprisingly, these include clips from the very next episode, which features the long overdue return of the Judoon. But it also includes far more than that. We have hints of new creatures, the upcoming return of the Cybermen, and a reminder of the Timeless Child…
Gallifrey
One thing that leaps out is that we get an extremely brief glimpse of Gallifrey – or at least, its remains. Are we revisiting the planet later in the series? Admittedly, there’s a chance that we won’t be seeing it again, and that the shot is just there to remind viewers of the events from Spyfall: Part 2.
But if it were to appear again later in the series, the finale is looking like the best bet. It could be the Doctor revealing to her friends what happened to her home – something she’s currently keeping secret from them – or it could be for another reason entirely. Regardless, it definitely grabs the attention.
Foreshadowing the end?
Another moment that leaps out is Ryan asking a key question:
"How long is this gonna last, Yaz?"
Could this be foreshadowing that the companions won’t be travelling with the Doctor for much longer? It’s not an unlikely possibility. After all, not many companions have lasted more than two seasons in the New Series. Maybe two and a half, at most.
More from Winter is Coming
- For All Mankind finally gives us information in Episode 405, “Goldilocks”
- Watch a stunning VFX breakdown of The Wheel of Time season 2
- Of course Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) thinks Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen) should rule Westeros
- Confirmed: The Last of Us season 2 will air in 2025
- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
Or is Chris Chibnall foreshadowing something even bigger than a simple departure? Torchwood fans know what he did to two of the regulars at the end of the spin-off’s second series, after all…
The Timeless Child
Finally, the last thing that stands out is a repeat of the Master’s line from Spyfall: Part 1:
"Everything that you think you know is a lie."
Could we be finding out more about “the Timeless Child” at the end of the series? It’s looking likely. While we only got a very brief mention of it last series in The Ghost Monument, it seems to be the key focus this series. More than that: we got glimpses of a child in Spyfall: Part 2. Considering how quickly child actors grow up (just look at the cast of Stranger Things), I’m guessing Chibnall is going to reveal more on this story sooner rather than later.
While the teaser doesn’t offer anything too much (and quite right, too), it’s definitely left us with plenty to speculate over for the rest of the series.
