Black Lightning Episode 310: “The Book of Markovia: Chapter One: Blessings and Curses Reborn”
Of all the Arrowverse shows this week, Black Lightning was my least favorite, not because it was horrible, but just because it wasn’t on the same level as the rest.
I will say, however, that it’s very nice to see the show officially part of the Arrowverse now. The references and the overlap are something we can get excited about, instead of wondering if Black Lightning was part of the same universe.
Post-Crisis, Jefferson is trying to get his bearings back in Freeland. Meanwhile, his daughter Jennifer was stuck in an alternate dimension. Jennifer swimming around in white light was a very odd scene. They didn’t really do a good job explaining what was going on here. They tried to in the episode prior to the Crisis beginning, but I’m still confused.
What I did get out of the whole ordeal was that Jennifer came out of the alternate realities wanting to stop/kill Odell. She knew working with him could only lead to trouble, and she can’t let him hurt anyone else.
I think Arrowverse fans were really caught off guard with Lynn’s story during this episode because she has very much gone off the deep end. She’s addicted to Green Light, and without it, she’s completely cracked out, violent and angry. She even hits Jefferson when he tries to help!
Meanwhile, Jennifer and Brandon (the other metahuman she has befriended) are taken by the ASA (and later escape), which is kidnapping children. But have no fear, Jefferson and Anissa are on the case. It makes me wonder where Lynn has run off to while her family is trying to save the world and fight for their lives…Is she okay?
Not to mention, beating Odell is going to be a lot harder than Jennifer thought. For a brief moment, she think she has defeated him, but it was just a threatening hologram.
By the end of the episode, I felt lost and confused by the direction Black Lightning was taking. Are we supposed to focus on Lynn? Who is this Brandon guy that is suddenly Jennifer’s BFF? And is Odell even someone that can be taken down?
I’m hoping to get some clarity as we delve further into the season, but for now, I’m feeling a bit disconnected from this Arrowverse show, and I’m not liking it.
