The Eternals is “the most sci-fi of all the Marvel movies”

Marvel’s The Eternals is gearing up to be an epic and wild ride. Just based on what I’ve personally seen and heard at D23 and San Diego Comic-Con, there is so much headed our way with this magnificent story.

The Eternals is about an ancient race of aliens who have been protecting the Earth for millennia. A tragedy forces them to come into the light and face their just-as-ancient enemy, the Deviants. And here I was thinking things couldn’t get weirder than the never-ending loop between Dr. Strange and Dormammu.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, star Kumail Nanjiani — who plays the Eternal Kingo — confirmed that The Eternals is going to be like no MCU movie before it:

"[I]t’s really such a science-fiction story. It’s a superhero story, but in some ways, it’s the most sci-fi of all the Marvel movies and it’s the most epic of all the Marvel movies. And the story spans thousands of years. So it’s really not like any of the other Marvel movies."

It’s also unlike anything Nanjiani, who’s mostly known for his comedy work, has ever done before. Refer to his recent Instagram post:

But what makes The Eternals so unique isn’t just its story. Seeing the cast in person at places like at D23 and San Diego Comic-Con was indicative of just how special this movie is going to be. The diverse cast is definitely a draw, for one thing. “I was on set shooting, and the director showed me just a still of all of us together in the scene,” Nanjiani said. “And I was like, ‘I mean, look at all of us together.’ We all look so different. It’s me and a huge buff guy from Korea and Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie and Gemma Chan and Lauren Ridloff. You don’t ever get to see people like this together in the same room, let alone in awesome superhero costumes.”

The movie also stars Game of Thrones veterans Richard Madden and Kit Harington, who you can see in behind-the-scenes pics!

The world is in need of stories that reflect the variety of people in the world, and based on the early knowledge of the movie, I think The Eternals is going to do just that.

And because this will involve characters not seen in the MCU before, it could be a great new entry point, something Marvel needs as it embarks on a new phase. I’m hoping that this movie will take us into the next age of Marvel superheroes while maintaining everything we love about the MCU.
