Doctor Who: Captain Jack won’t return in Series 12
By James Aggas
After a fantastic return to Doctor Who, fans will have to wait a little while longer to see Captain Jack Harkness again on-screen. But he’s almost certainly not gone forever…
A major highlight from Sunday’s episode of Doctor Who was, of course, the unexpected return of Captain Jack Harkness. With his last appearance in the series being over ten years ago – in David Tennant’s final episode The End of Time: Part 2 – fans of the character were eager to see him meet the Thirteenth Doctor.
Sadly, that hasn’t happened yet. While Jack met all three of the Doctor’s companions – making sure to pass on a warning about “the Lone Cyberman” – he has yet to say hello to the Doctor’s current incarnation.
And it looks like we’re going to have wait a little while longer yet, at least according to showrunner Chris Chibnall in an interview with The Mirror.
"You won’t see him again this series, I can categorically tell you that."

Gone, but not forever
This news is a little disappointing, but fans shouldn’t worry too much about seeing the Captain again. Certainly, Chibnall is more than happy to bring him back at a later point.
"But who knows when he might pop up again? We love Captain Jack, we love John Barrowman. I hope that won’t be his last appearance and that at some point he gets to meet the 13th Doctor."
He’s not the only one who’s eager for Jack to return. In an interview with SyFy Wire, John Barrowman made it very clear that he doesn’t want this to be his last appearance on Doctor Who.
"Well, I’ll just say, if I’m asked [by the BBC] I’ll be back at the drop of a hat, because I love Captain Jack."
So while we may not be seeing him again this year, I’m sure that we can expect him to return at some point. With a showrunner that clearly loves the character and Barrowman himself eager to play Captain Jack again, it’s not a case of if he will return, but when.
