Neil Gaiman: Lucifer ending has nothing to do with Netflix’s Sandman
By Ashley Hurst
Lucifer, the show about what happens after the devil leaves hell to open a nightclub, is getting ready to air its final season on Netflix, which gave it a new lease on life after it was cancelled by Fox.
But could the show have lasted longer? That’s a question fans are asking, and they’re wondering if the show ending now has something to do with Netflix developing a live-action adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. You see, this version of Lucifer first appeared in The Sandman, and then was used by Fox in the Lucifer TV show. He plays a prominent role within the Sandman graphic novels, making several appearances throughout the 75 issues, and is central to the plot of Volume 4, “Season of Mists.”
So is Netflix clearing the boards to avoid duplication? Neil Gaiman once again took to Twitter, where he’s taken to shooting down rumors about The Sandman series, to clarify things. He talked to a fan worried that the reason Lucifer was ending was because Gaiman and Netflix wanted to focus on promoting Sandman instead.
And that’s that.
But there’s another question that’s come up since we learned about The Sandman show: Will it take place in the same universe as Lucifer? Maybe Tom Ellis could even reprise his role as the suave king of hell? Shared universes are all the rage nowadays, so the idea isn’t absurd. I wouldn’t get too excited, though, because Ellis’ Lucifer has quite a different personality on the show as compared to the comics. Still, it is an interesting concept!
Here’s to Neil Gaiman continuing to answer our questions!
