Episode 408: “The Funeral to End All Funerals”
Well, obviously that was worth it to see Disco Janet. And I’m not talking about the episode or ever the season. I mean the whole series.
The Good Place marks a little time and does a little setup here. The funerals for Eleanor, Jason and Tahani were cute, but the real fireworks went off in the judge’s courtroom, where she ruled that Michael and his crew…were right! The afterlife point system does not accurately account for the complications of human behavior in the modern world, if it ever did. The solution? Cancel humanity and start over again, with amoebas or something. “Can’t we tweak it?” asks Tahani, looking for a middle path. Nope, we’re looking to blow up the system or nothing.
Honestly, I thought this was a little bit of a cheat. I always got the impression that the good place bureaucrats had control over the afterlife, but not, like…all life. Did anyone else get that? Still, it ratchets up some tension ahead of the next episode, which gives a newly awakened Chidi, the most indecisive man on Earth, an opportunity to design a new afterlife point system in the 45 minutes it takes the judge to search through all the Janets’ voids. It’s on.
I’m wiling to look past any plot contrivance and just ride this momentum to the end. Bring it home, The Good Place. All you have to do is give us the definitive answer to how to live a moral life. Should be easy.
The Good Bullet Points
- “Well, you’re glue!”
- “The only sad thing was, she never got over her speech impediment.”
- It’s nice that we get an in-universe explanation for why Chidi is so jacked.
- Dark cancer joke, Jason.
- I loved Eleanor’s “Dead AF” shirt.
