Locke & Key — Available now

The same day that Mythic Quest lands, Netflix will also be unlocking its next big foray into genre shows. Based on the comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key follows three siblings who move into their creepy ancestral mansion after their father is brutally murdered. They’re unaware, however, that the house has plenty of secrets of its own, mainly that it’s full of magical keys which, when paired with their respective locks, grant supernatural powers. Unfortunately, there’s also a demon who wants these keys. Complications arise.

The trailer is certainly intriguing enough, with a vibe that’s reminiscent of classic kids-in-scary-houses horror stories like Goosebumps. The showrunners are Carlton Cuse (Lost), Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House) and Aron Eli Coleite (Heroes), which is an impressive lineup. That sort of creative team alone is enough to make me hopeful that this show will be good.

But considering its long and winding road to production, a modicum of wariness still feels warranted. The show has had a fairly tumultuous journey getting to the small screen, having spent almost 10 years being optioned by everyone from Fox to Hulu before finally being snatched up by Netflix.
