Westworld season 3 gets bleak poster, scary tagline

Westworld is as impeccably crafted and beautiful to look at as anything in the history of TV, with gorgeous cinematography and impressive special effects. It’s also incredibly pessimistic about humanity. It’s set in a future where human beings have built artificial life so advanced that it gains sentience and decides to take over the world, basically. The interesting part is that the show seems to think the robots (or “hosts”) are in the right, and that humans are grubby little simpletons that can’t let go of their baser, self-destructive instincts no matter what leaps forward they make in technology. So far, the heroes of the show have been soulful robots hosts like Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood), Maeve Millay (Thandie Newton) and Bernard Lowe (Jeffrey Wright), not avaricious humans like the Man in Black (Ed Harris).

I mean, just look at the teaser for season 3. That is a scary black spreading mass, not a good black spreading mass:

The just-released poster, too, is pretty bleak. Take a look:

“Free will is not free.” Now that Dolores has left the confines of the Westworld theme park and stepped into the human world, it sounds like she’s going to get to the business of making a place for herself and the rest of the hosts she smuggled out, even if she has to tear down the human world to do it. Yay?

So who is the kneeled-over robotic figure in the poster? Some are wondering if it’s Dolores herself, since we can see little tatters of the power blue prairie dresses she wore a lot of back in Westworld:

I think it’s more symbolic, though, since Dolores presumably left those dresses behind in the park.

After a strong first season, I thought Westworld had a bit of a rough season 2, but it looks like the team at HBO is shaking things up in all the right ways. Westworld season 3 premieres on March 15!
