Supergirl Episode 512: “Back from the Future — Part Two”

Supergirl is back, and so is the Toyman storyline. Can I just say that I’m so happy Jeremy Jordan is back as Winn? The show desperately missed him in his absence, and it feels like we’re whole again with him back. I’m not sure how long it will last, but I am going to enjoy it.

This week’s plot revolves around Toyman, aka evil Winn. Team Supergirl thought they had rid themselves of this nuisance, but unfortunately, he uploaded himself into the DEO database and is wreaking havoc every which way.

I’m not sure about anyone else, but seeing Jordan play both good and bad Winn is awfully entertaining. It’s another reminder of his immense talent and why the show needed him to come back.

Between the Toyman story and Lex/Brainy story, there’s a lot going on here. What is the Lex/Brainy story, you ask? Well, Brainy has been doing a lot of dirty work for Lex since he took his inhibitors off. He’s not the same

guy

alien we knew. This week, his mission is to get his hands on Toyman’s code so Lex can use it to defeat Leviathan, and become immortal.

Oh goodness, an immortal Lex Luthor? No thanks. Lex Luthor, “the good guy,” might be the worst thing to come out of the Crisis, especially since it’s all a facade.

The Arrowverse has had its share of crazy, wacky technology. But this Obsidian tech in Supergirl might be the winner. It’s a freaky contact lens situation that puts you in a virtual reality state, but it’s straight-up frightening. Whatever you eat in the fake reality affects you in your real one, and it’s just too real.

Winn uses this tech to upload himself into the database. It also brings back the original Toyman, Winn’s father. Yes, he was evil, but he seems to be changed now and just wants to help Winn out.

Naturally, Winn isn’t too eager to trust his A.I. father, but he doesn’t really have a choice. Don’t you just love when the Arrowverse presents its characters with such daunting dilemmas? It’s something I very much love about this world. There are constant battles between good vs bad and right vs wrong. We all remember the early days of Arrow as Oliver set out on his mission, don’t we?

Lex hasn’t made any of this easy on Team Supergirl thanks to Brainy tampering with the system. Alex catches Brainy trying to copy the code when she realizes he removed the spyware from her tablet. He didn’t want Lex to find her using the tablet, so he tried to do something nice, I guess? Maybe? The verdict is still out on that one.

And then there’re the Lexosuits hidden in the DEO. Thanks to the Toyman code, they come to life and go crazy attacking everyone. It’s up to Winn to stop this hot mess, which is why he uploads himself digitally. If he can take out the kill code, he can shut all this down. Of course, this means he’d lose his father forever, but it’s what has to be done. At least there was some closure on that front.

In the DEO, the Lexosuits are causing all sorts of chaos, but Brainy comes to the rescue by shining his bright inhibitor lights on them so the rest of Team Supergirl can take them down. And then something interesting happens…

Alex decides to quit the DEO and work with J’onn at the Tower. This gives Brainy a promotion to director of the DEO, but I don’t really see that panning out in the long run. Side note: Brainy’s character development has been interesting to follow. At first, he was just an annoying character who didn’t make much sense. But suddenly, he’s just as conflicted and lost as everyone else. I guess that’s what happens when your personality is no longer inhibited, huh?

Winn finally prepares to go back to the future (hopefully this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him), while Kara decides to tell William she’s just not that into him. You see, she’s struggling with the whole “I’m Supergirl” angle, so she doesn’t want the Lena situation to repeat itself again.

As Kara contemplates her decisions with Alex, the final moments of the episode introduce Mr. Mxyzptlk. Say what? I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to find out what this guy is all about in Supergirl’s 100th episode! The Arrowverse has grown so much, guys!
