Disney’s live-action Mulan gets rare PG-13 rating

Disney is all grown up, guys! What do I mean by that? Well, it’s still remaking its animated classics as live-action movies, but so far, they’ve all maintained the family friendly quality of the original. However, the upcoming Mulan remake is the first of these remakes to get a PG-13 rating, even though the original movie was rated G.

If you’ve watched the original movie, you know that Mulan is a story about war. If you take some of those moments and make them live-action, you’ve got yourself some very real and very dramatic sequences. And that is indeed why the movie has been rated like it has: “sequences of violence.” Personally, I can’t wait to see Mulan with that bow and arrow participating in an epic battle or two.

Is this just the start of what we can expect from Disney? Might the upcoming Little Mermaid remake be too much for little kids? I doubt it but it’s something to think about.

Anyway, it’s nice to see Disney pushing their boundaries a little bit and telling a mature story when the material demands it. Having said that, I don’t want them to lose the childlike appeal and magic that many of us have grown up appreciating. Don’t grow up too fast, okay Disney?
